Wisdom of the Week

Wisdom of the Week #5

In the name of God who is Merciful towards all creation and Especially Merciful towards believers

We made whatever is on the earth an adornment for it in order to test people as to which of them do better in conduct. (7) And surely We will turn whatever is on earth into a barren desert. (8) (Al-Kahf, 7-8)

Each year in spring, nature becomes green and lush as if it has been decorated. But with the arrival of fall and its cold and bitter winds, all these decorations suddenly fall into pieces and the trees taste winter again.

Many of the things people possess are temporary, in order to distinguish the best of people. Wealth, rank, power, fame and so forth are all temporary adornments which properly demonstrate a person’s’ spiritual station and their level of transcendence.

There are people who are overfond of such superficial adornments and forget the reality of their own humanity. Likewise, there are people who value their humanity much more than these adornments, and therefore these temporary adornments can never make them forget the truth of who they are. It is these people who have the strongest bond with their true self and with those around them, and they hold onto it with their dear life.

Wisdom of the Week #4

In the name of God who is Merciful towards all creation and Especially Merciful towards believers

Quran states that humankind is sitting at the table of God’s banquet, with an endless flow of His grace and blessings upon us. However, there have been nations who deprived themselves of this continuous flow of mercy by negative changes in their being. (Quran Al-Anfal 53, Al-Raad 11)

From God’s side, it is always mercy, grace, and abundance. It is upon us to be cautious about our bad behavior and to keep this flow of mercy running by avoiding behavioral anomalies.

Humankind has caused abnormal climate changes and extinction crisis of species by inappropriate actions. Our current bioenvironmental problems are in fact the aftermath of these activities. Mother nature and the environment have always been in a good state until humankind’s interventions which have contaminated and destroyed them.

This is also true about the flow of Divine mercy in the entire universe. If nations stay away from negative changes and behaviors, the flow of God’s mercy will be indefinite. The vital factor in having peace, and an abundance of comfort and well-being for people is to stay away from bad and inappropriate behaviors so they don’t deprive themselves of a kind and loving look.

Wisdom of the Week 4/5/19

In the name of God who is Merciful towards all creation and Especially Merciful towards believers

Zachariah humbly and politely supplicated and reached out to God. He said, “ Oh, my Lord! I am now old and feeble, and my hair has turned white. I have always come to you with my needs and supplications. My Lord! I am worried about my family not having a spiritual guide and helper after me. My wife is barren so bestow upon me a child from Your presence who will be one of Your friends, an heir who inherits me and inherits from the house of Jacob.( Inheritance here is referring to continuing the legacy of prophethood and not wealth, etc.).  And make him, my Lord, one with whom You are Well-pleased. (Quran, Maryam 2-6).

Zachariah was a great prophet and chosen by God. He never lost faith in God’s Mercy and always held his head down in front of God's greatness. It was for this reason that God always held him under his indefinite mercy. He wished for a child and so he asked God to make his wish come true. He asked for a child who would be pure and God's chosen, who would live life at the highest spiritual levels. God granted him his wish.

Wisdom of the Week 3/29/19

In the name of God, the All-Merciful, the Especially-Merciful

David was praying when two people suddenly entered into his presence. One of them said " This is my brother and he owns 99 sheep while I only own one. Yet he wants to take possession of my single sheep by force."  In response David said " He would be doing you injustice if he takes your one sheep by force." David realized that what happened was a trial for him and he immediately sought God's forgiveness and fell into prostration and remembered God.

David didn't say anything wrong so why did he ask for God's forgiveness?

Maybe his repentance was because he realized the conflict was a trial with a slight delay. Small people make the biggest mistakes and are not worried the slightest. But David who is a perfect human begs forgiveness for realizing the conflict was a trial even though he was successful and gave the right response.

When God tests a servant, those who realize they are in trial are at a higher level of remembrance and their hearts are more attentive towards God. (Quran, Sad 21-25)

3/20/19: Wisdom of The Week

In the name of God, the All-Merciful, the Especially-Merciful

Prophet David worshipped God extensively and spent his life in constant remembrance and prayer. This was to an extent that mountains joined voices with him in praising and glorifying God. All the birds would gather around and attend to him. David, a divine messenger and a saint who is unified with God (Wali), is an example of a perfect human. A perfect human is one who gets close to God by obeying his every command and hence gaining light and divinity. A perfect human has such a big soul that not only can he bring humans together from disparity, darkness and bewilderment but he can bring stones to life, praising God with him. Through him, even birds and animals come together  and become one. (Quran, Sad 17-19)
