Successful Semi-Annual Fundraising Event at the Islamic House of Wisdom

A crowd of 500 guests gathered at the Islamic House of Wisdom from religious leaders, Interfaith, Council of Imams of MMCC, elected officials, Mayor of Dearborn Heights- Mr. Daniel Paletko, Mayor of Wayne- Mr. Abdul "Al" Haidous, Consul-General of Lebanon-Mr. Bilal Qabalan, Chairman and board members of Islamic Center of America, Bint Jbeil, Message of Hope, Al-Beqa, and a good number of community leaders, activists, teachers and professionals.

Dr. Mohammad Ajjour, the founding Chairman and a member of IHW's Advisory Council welcomed the dinner guests and spoke about services and contributions of IHW to the community.

During this dinner, 4 distinguished guests were honored for their qualities and contributions to our community and country.

Sir Michel Berry was introduced by IHW Vice Chair person, Hajjah Vicki Ashker and was honored for an Outstanding lifetime of Leadership, Vision, Courageous Community and National Outreach, Hard work and Social Services!

Hajjah Neemat Haidous Turfe was introduced by Dr. Hoda Amin and honored for Outstanding Faith and Family values,  Humanitarian Services and promoting the Culture of  Cooperation and Volunteerism in the Community.

Dr. Mahmoud Al-Hadidi was introduced by Mr. Osama Siblini, Editor of the Arab American News For Outstanding Dedication, Community Leadership, Promoting Unity, Moderation and Social Services!

Sayyed Hamid Al-Sadr was introduced by Hajj Ali Ghossein For Outstanding Moral Values, Great Family Background and Sincere Services to the Sadr Foundation.

The keynote speaker of the ceremony was Imam Mohammad Ali Elahi, the founding imam of IHW who spoke about the mission of the mosque and its role in constructing the character of the community based on faith and moral values. Creating a truthful, trustworthy, just, compassionate, caring, hardworking, educated, ethical and confident community is the main mission of the mosque.

Imam Elahi stated that the mosque will succeed in its mission only with people’s participation, engagement and support. He warned the families about the crisis of the youth, consisting the threat of drugs, drinking, depression, crime and suicide. The imam encouraged the community to participate in the mosque services, programs and activities with their children with an emphasis on Friday prayer.

He pointed out that the role of mosques are more than a lecture that can be found online. The experiences of unity, interaction, celebration of similarities, family and personal development, working for a common destiny, practicing charity are just a few elements that the mosque enables for a stronger community.

Imam emphasized on the role of Friday prayer in uniting and maintaining the community and thanked God that since the establishment of the Islamic House of Wisdom 19 years ago, the Friday prayer was never canceled and always begins sharp on time.

In the last part of his message the imam spoke about the social and political challenges of the community, in particular the tragedy of Takfiry theology and extremism.  He condemned the recent crimes of ISIS in beheading the American aid worker, Peter Kassig (Abdol-Rahman) and19 Syrian citizens. He also condemned Islamophobia and some Christian extremists who could not even tolerate the prayer of peaceful Muslims who were invited to hold their Friday prayer in Washington National Cathedral. He asked Muslims and Christians to work together against hate, injustice, racism, war and violence.

10/12/14: Eid al-Ghadir Family Breakfast & Celebration

Last Week's Sunday Service- Eid al-Ghadir Family Breakfast & Celebration- See Photo Highlights: HERE

  The first Sunday Service & Breakfast of the season was held to honor the occasion of Eid al-Ghadir at the Islamic House of Wisdom, Sunday- October 12, 2014. The breakfast was sponsored by Hajji Sabah Chahine in memory of her late father, Hajj Abdul-Hussein (please recite fatiha on behalf his soul). Brother's- Younus & Yusef Makki recited the Quran and nasheed beautifully to begin the program, Sister's- Teeba Saidoun and Abir Safa recited poetry written from their hearts- specifically for the occasion of Eid al-Ghadir. Imam Elahi spoke on the significance and life lessons of Ghadir. Candy was given to the kids at the end of the program, donated by the generous Wutwut family.

Eid Prayer & Family Service!

The Dua began at 9:00am followed with Eid prayer at 9:30am. A hajj reenactment and orientation was held in the auditorium for the children led by the staff of the Arabic-Islamic school. Of course candy for the kids and sweets for all too! Hope everyone had a wonderful and blessed Eid!

The Advisory Council of IHW held its September session, reflecting on Muslim Community's challenges and opportunities. 

This is our time and our chance to change and leave a legacy for a better world! Please read the report published in the Arab American News HERE and share with us your ideas and recommendations. 

Advisory Council Meeting at the Islamic House of Wisdom

September 17, 2014- The IHW Advisory Council met for the second time in a month to discuss and strategize the community's challenges and opportunities.

Imam Elahi welcomed the Advisers and opened the meeting emphasizing on important of engagement of the community in all issues related to our spiritual, social, moral and political destination!

He also spoke about importance of participation in protection of the image and dignity of our faith and people against ignorance, Islamophobia and ISIS.

He said our success in raising a faithful new generation requires a collective effort by parents, schools, mosques, social network and all other human resources.

Following hajj Abed Hamoud's recommendation and agreement of the members, Judge Charlene Elder chaired the meeting.

The Council went through the the list of ideas already raised including:

Family issues, disaster of the increasing divorce rate, drugs and alcohol, standing against ISIS and other terrorist organizations, the concept of halal and haram, building stronger bridges between youth and the mosques, teach children how to love God rather than fear of God,  more attention to Friday prayer, raise awareness about true Islam, Why Islam is being presented as a threat, attention to the danger of Atheism, inviting more English speaking scholars to the mosque, preparing youth for more critical thinking, role of women, focus on ethics and morality when speaking to the youth, promoting the culture of volunteerism, being good ambassadors of Islam in our jobs, business, schools and neighborhood, provide education for parents, organize ourselves to make a change, Increase outreach to colleges, Invite student organizations and more!

To make the Council more productive, the Advisers went through the list and voted for two subjects to be on the agenda for the next meeting on Oct 15th.

1-Youth: How to make the mosque youth-friendly 

2-Islamophobia: How to deal with the public's view of Muslims in the context of ISIS.

Wayne County Executive, Robert Ficano stopped by to wish everyone a Happy Eid and passed his greetings on behalf of Wayne County to the participants of the Islamic House of Wisdom. Today, July 24, 2014: Arabic-Islamic School held a program for the families to honor the last day of the summer classes. Arabic school Principal, Hajjah Salam Farhat and Imam Elahi welcomed the families and the imam talked briefly about Ramadan to the students and their parents. Under the guidance of their teachers, the students recited various chapters of the Holy Quran, dua and poetry. Details of the next program will be posted soon! Nights of Power Services held at the Islamic House of Wisdom!
 6 nights of prayer and reflection were held at the IHW lasting until the early hours of every morning. Various reciters participated in the dua that was projected on a screen for all to follow both in Arabic and English. In the early morning, breakfast (sohoor) was served for all in preparation for all to begin their daily fasting.

05/31/14: Step 1 of Foster Care Licensing: Orientation held at the IHW

Step 1 of Foster Care Licensing: Orientation held at the IHW 

May 31, 2014: Almost 20 people attended a Foster Care Orientation that was held at the Islamic House of Wisdom including Imam Mohammad Ali Elahi and wife, Hajji Jennifer Elahi. Photo Highlights: HERE

By attending the orientation, all participants completed Step one of the licensing process. If they choose to continue in the licensing procedures, next they will attend two more classes (12 hours), complete the application process and once all of the documents are processed- they will be licensed for short/long term and emergency care!

Universal Academy Class of 2014: Ceremony Held at the IHW  

Wednesday, May 28, 2014: A graduation ceremony honoring Universal Academy's high school class of 2014 was held at the IHW. We congratulate all graduates and their families!

We would also like to congratulate Hajji Nawal Hamadeh who is founder of four local academies- Star International Academy in Dearborn Heights, Universal Learning Academy in Westland, Noor International Academy in Sterling Heights and Universal Academy in Detroit, where today she serves as Superintendent and CEO, overseeing operations and a combined academic community of 280 staff members and more than 2,300 students.

Ladies Luncheon at the Islamic House of Wisdom a Success!  

Last Friday, May 16, 2014: Islamic House of Wisdom held a ladies Luncheon with Guest speaker: Dr. Mona Fakih and Co-Presenter, Hajji Dr. Vicki Ashker. In an open discussion for the ladies, Dr. Fakih focused on a range of women's health topics. At the end, she was available to advise and answer all health questions for the participants. Hajja Vicki thanked everyone for attending and added some brief comments on the activities, primarily for the ladies that the IHW offers. Following the program, there was a  complementary lunch available to all. Tuesday, May 13, 2014: This Islamic House of Wisdom held a family celebration honoring the birth of Imam Ali (as). The evening program included a presentation from Imam Mohammad Ali Elahi, Q&A with the children, followed with dinner and a raffle. Some of the raffle winners are highlighted in the pictures. Birthday Celebration of Sayedah Fatimah (as)

On April 18, 2014- the Islamic House of Wisdom held an evening program for ladies featuring nasheed & recitation by Hajji Hanan & Sr. Kawthar. Four students of the started the evening with recitation of the holy Quran. Following, Sr. Teeba Sadoun delivered a short message & poetry. Imam Elahi stopped by to welcome everyone to the Islamic House of Wisdom and shared some reflections on the life of Sayedah Fatimah (as). Before the recitations of respected guests, Hajji Hanan & Sr. Kawthar- everyone enjoyed in a catered dinner from Dearborn Manor. At the conclusion of the program- prizes were awarded to raffle winners of the evening.

April 12, 2014- Islamic House of Wisdom celebrated its Semi-Annual fundraising dinner Saturday successfully, attracting a large number of supporters and a group of interfaith leaders.

The crowd included Wayne County Executive Robert Ficano, State Representative David Knezek, Islamic Center of American Chairman hajj Khalil Kadouh and a group of ICA board members and some members of the Bint Jebail Cultural Center Board.

IHW Board of Trustee chairman, David Abdullah and IHW spiritual leader, Imam Mohammad Elahi welcomed guests and presented a report on IHW's educational, spiritual, social and family services, including the complete funeral services that IHW is currently offering.

IHW is not a place for prayer only, it's a community center to meet the personal, family and even financial needs of the poor to the best of its capacity.

During the dinner, IHW honored four community members for their achievements and their service to the community, including hajj Chaffic Moussa, hajj Ahmad and hajja Rehab Amer and hajj Chuck Bazzi.

Hajj Moussa has been a long-time member of the Islamic Center of America and has been volunteering in the community for more than 50 years. 

The Amers led an arduous struggle for justice to convince the Michigan government to enact new laws to protect innocent children.

Hajj Chuck Bazzi was an active member of  Islamic House of Wisdom during his membership in the  Board of Trustees.

The awardees expressed appreciation to IHW's Imam and board, and Moussa captured the moment with his remarks to the audience:

"It gives me a distinct honor to receive this award tonight which I humbly and gratefully accept on behalf of all hard working individuals in our community, and we are blessed to have many of them.

I would like to thank the board of directors and Imam Elahi, whom I've had the pleasure of working with throughout the years. Under his leadership, this great institution has been able to grow and reach new heights.

I leave you with this: When you were born you cried and the world around you rejoiced. Live your life so that when you die, the world cries and you will rejoice. Keep up the good work ".

04/05/14: Saturday School Students Met With Imam Elahi

4-5-14: Some students of the weekend IHW Arabic & Islamic School met with Imam Mohammad Ali Elahi in the masjid at the IHW. Imam Elahi answered questions from the youth and engaged the students with a discussion related to youth in Islam. Together, they concluded with group afternoon prayers and dua. The students enjoyed the discussion and prayers. More activities of the weekend Arabic-Islamic School to be posted soon, stay tuned.
